Firearms Safety for the First Responder – Awareness Level
Firearms are a routine reality of the environments in which first responders work. EMS professionals, firefighters, and rescue personnel may encounter firearms in residences, vehicles, on patients, or during calls involving shootings, suicides, domestic incidents, behavioral emergencies, welfare checks, and other everyday responses.
Firearms Safety for the First Responder – Awareness Level is a 6-hour, 100% online course designed to give non-law-enforcement first responders the firearms literacy, situational awareness, and decision-making skills necessary to recognize firearm-related hazards and respond appropriately when a weapon is encountered.
This is not a shooting course, concealed-weapons course, or tactical firearms program. The objective is not to turn first responders into firearms operators. Instead, the course focuses on helping responders recognize what they are seeing, understand the associated risks, avoid unnecessary weapon manipulation, protect themselves and their patients, and appropriately coordinate with law enforcement.
Participants explore firearm fundamentals and terminology; common handgun, rifle, and shotgun designs; ammunition and basic firearm condition recognition; universal firearm safety principles; scene size-up and situational awareness; staging and withdrawal considerations; firearms discovered during patient assessment and trauma exposure; weapons found in homes and vehicles; armed patients and bystanders; concealed and holstered firearms; evidence preservation and documentation; interagency coordination; and special situations encountered during emergency response.
Scenario-based instruction reinforces practical decision-making throughout the program, including what to do when a firearm is discovered on or near a patient, during patient exposure, inside a vehicle or residence, or in the possession of another person on scene.
A central principle of the course is:
Recognize the hazard. Avoid unnecessary handling. Maintain muzzle and trigger awareness if movement becomes unavoidable. Secure and isolate the hazard. Involve law enforcement whenever appropriate.
Awareness Level – 100% Online
The course is completed entirely online and does not require a hands-on practical session.
Successful participants receive a Firearms Safety for the First Responder – Awareness Level certificate documenting completion of the educational program.
The Awareness Level course does not provide practical firearms competency or certify participants in firearm operation, tactical firearms use, marksmanship, defensive shooting, or law-enforcement weapons handling.
Individual and Agency Training
Individual responders can enroll online and complete the six-hour program at their own pace.
Fire departments, EMS agencies, hospitals, rescue organizations, and other public safety organizations can also deploy the program through the Trilogy EMS Special Operations Training Portal, providing centralized enrollment, course delivery, completion tracking, and training documentation for their personnel.
