Emergency Vehicle Operations Field Preceptor Course
The Emergency Vehicle Operations Field Preceptor Course is an 8-hour online certification program designed for experienced emergency vehicle operators who supervise, coach, evaluate, and document the performance of newly trained drivers during field operations.
Completing an EVOC course establishes that an operator has received initial training and demonstrated required driving skills. But there is an important transition between completing EVOC and operating independently: applying those skills on real streets, in agency vehicles, during actual Fire and EMS operations. The Field Preceptor serves in that critical right-seat role.
This course provides a standardized, defensible method for evaluating emergency vehicle operators in the field. Participants learn to replace subjective impressions with observable driving behaviors, coach performance effectively, conduct structured debriefings, recognize human error, at-risk behavior and reckless choices, document performance, identify remediation needs, and make evidence-based recommendations regarding readiness for independent operation.
Course content includes:
- The Standard and the Seat โ The role, authority, and responsibilities of the Field Preceptor
- What Good Driving Looks Like โ Converting DOT, NFPA, and agency requirements into observable driving behaviors
- Riding Right Seat โ Observation, coaching, intervention, and evaluating performance during actual operations
- The Debrief โ A structured method for turning observations into meaningful behavioral change
- Just Culture Behind the Wheel โ Distinguishing human error, at-risk behavior, and reckless choices
- Documentation That Holds Up โ Creating objective, behavior-based records that demonstrate performance and progression
- The Release Decision โ Readiness criteria, remediation, and recommendations for independent operation
- The Preceptor Is the Culture โ How field training influences long-term driving behavior and agency safety culture
The program recognizes that the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) establishes its own policies, qualification requirements, timelines, and release criteria. Trilogy EMS provides the Field Preceptor with a repeatable methodology for observing, coaching, documenting, and recommending; the agency retains authority over how its driver-training program is administered.
