Venomous emergencies are uncommon for many EMS providers—but when they occur, early recognition, appropriate field management, and sound transport decisions can significantly influence patient care.
Venomous Envenomation for EMS – Awareness Level is a 4-hour, 100% online awareness course designed for EMS and public safety professionals who may encounter patients suffering from snakebites and other venomous envenomations. The course provides a practical, evidence-based approach to scene safety, recognition, patient assessment, initial prehospital management, medical control consultation, and destination decisions.
Although regional hazards from Georgia, North Florida, the Florida Panhandle, and the Gulf Coast are emphasized, the clinical assessment and management principles presented in the course are applicable to EMS providers nationwide.
Students examine common venomous species and environmental hazards before progressing through systematic patient assessment, recognition of progressive toxicity, supportive care, treatments that should be avoided, pain-management principles, poison-center utilization, hospital notification, transport considerations, and documentation.
The course emphasizes what the EMS provider needs to recognize and do during the initial phase of care while addressing common myths and outdated practices surrounding venomous injuries. Case-based scenarios and clinical decision-making exercises reinforce application of the material to realistic prehospital situations.
Designed as an interactive online learning experience, the program incorporates clinical photographs, regional maps, EMS Pearls, Clinical Decision Points, case-based learning, practical field applications, and an end-of-course examination.
