Description

Dive Medical Technician (DMT): 100% Online

Divers get hurt far from a hospital. When they do, the person on the boat, the dock or the chamber floor has to recognize a diving injury, manage it and get the patient to definitive care. This course prepares EMTs, paramedics, PAs and NPs to be that person.

Who this course is for

  • EMTs and paramedics who dive, or who want to work in diving
  • Medics supporting recreational dive operations and resorts, commercial and offshore diving, public safety dive teams and scientific diving
  • Providers who work in, or want to work in, hyperbaric medicine
  • Physician assistants and nurse practitioners adding diving medicine to their practice

Built for the medic, not the diver

Traditional DMT courses were designed to turn commercial divers into medics, so they spend days on clinical skills. You already have those skills. This course builds on what you know and teaches the diving: the physics, the physiology, the injuries and how to manage them. That is why it can be delivered completely online.

What you will learn

  • Diving physics, gas behavior and the physiology of pressure
  • Decompression theory, decompression sickness and arterial gas embolism
  • Barotrauma of descent and ascent, and diving-related pulmonary emergencies
  • Oxygen toxicity and other gas-related problems
  • Assessment of the diving casualty, including the dive neurological exam
  • Other diving injuries, including environmental and marine injuries and contaminated-water exposures
  • Differential diagnosis of the injured diver
  • Recompression treatment procedures and invasive procedures under pressure
  • Chamber operations and operational safety
  • Field and operational practice, from the dive site to definitive care
  • Infection prevention and control

How the course works

  • 100% online and self-paced. Start when you enroll and work on your own schedule
