Description
Introduction to Hyperbaric Medicine: 100% Online
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy treats non-healing diabetic wounds, radiation injuries, carbon monoxide poisoning and decompression sickness. Many clinicians care for patients receiving it without ever having been taught how it works. This course gives licensed clinicians the full foundation of hyperbaric medicine, whether you are moving into the chamber as a hyperbaric nurse, a technician, or the provider who orders the treatment.
Who this course is for
- Registered nurses and licensed practical nurses
- Respiratory therapists
- Physicians and advanced practice providers
- Wound care professionals
- Clinicians moving into a hyperbaric or wound care clinic
Where this course takes you
- Registered nurses and LPNs: prepares you for the hyperbaric nurse role, assessing the patient before every treatment, monitoring them in the chamber and recognizing complications early. Apply for the IBHBOT Associate Hyperbaric Nurse (AHN) credential, then Hyperbaric Nurse Specialist (HNS) with documented clinical hours.
- Respiratory therapists and allied health: apply for Associate Hyperbaric Technician (AHT), then the Registered Hyperbaric Technician (RHT) mark after 500 documented clinical hours.
- Physicians, PAs and NPs: the foundation of hyperbaric medicine for the patients you refer, order or supervise. Apply for the IBHBOT Hyperbaric Medicine Provider (HMP) credential.
IBHBOT board certification
Your certificate of completion satisfies the 40-hour introductory hyperbaric medicine requirement for board certification through the International Board of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (IBHBOT). Your license decides which IBHBOT credential you apply for, and each one has its own board exam.
What you will learn
- Hyperbaric physics, gas laws and hyperbaric physiology
- Principles and clinical applications of hyperbaric oxygen therapy
- Patient assessment, preparation and monitoring during treatment
- Monoplace and multiplace chamber systems, oxygen delivery and gas systems
- Treatment protocols, compression and decompression
- Oxygen toxicity and adverse treatment events
- Fire prevention, oxygen safety and hyperbaric emergency procedures
- Infection prevention, patient safety, documentation and quality assurance
- Clinical case applications and treatment scenarios
How a hyperbaric clinic works
The patient sees the provider and is screened, the provider sets the treatment, and on return visits a nurse or technician checks the patient and brings them into the chamber. This course teaches what each of those steps depends on: what pressure does to gas and tissue, which conditions are treated and why, who should not go in the chamber, and what to watch for during and after treatment.
How the course works
- 100% online and self-paced. Start when you enroll and work on your own schedule
- Narrated modules with assessments, and a comprehensive final examination
- No travel and no classroom time
